Moz Madness!!

Here we go, yet another White expedition into the unknown – how we love these!!

All packed with everything but the kitchen sink, 2 cars, one trailer and 10 people later – Vilanculos here we come… Eventually leaving at 9:30 pm and as always whipping out the road trip snacks 30 minutes from home. Little did we realize the unavailability of replenishing snacks once the border is crossed...

We arrived at the border early in the morning and started out our day and our Mozambique stay with being cheated out of our metikas by the locals at the boarder, I have to say they know what they doing. We at least managed to save our pennies and into the unknown we continue. The lush vegetation and quaint little villages passed us by as our tummies growled more and more for something other than Woollies muffins and toffees. These later became our amusement when handing them out to bewildered yet inquisitive little kids beside the road while someone is taking a pee in the bush. The public toilets are horrendous and the bush is much safer to enter with no risk of passing out while going about your business.

2 Days later we eventually arrived at our exotic location. Sweaty and hungry we were welcomed by local song and dance which soon turned sour with the bad management skills of the South African couple running Casa Chibububo. Amongst the other disasters in our holiday we had to deal with the background noise of them fighting and screaming at the staff and each other. This being while they were not gossiping about the guests to the quests. On top of their bad communication skills there was no power from 11am to 6 pm and then again from 10pm to 9am. The result was that our cyclone Fedora dented fridge was never on for long enough to produce a local cold 2M beer in needy times!!! All this apart we had a great holiday, the local Mozambiquen staff were very entertaining and friendly, they even joined us for local bar hopping one evening.

Then there was the weather, 4 seasons in one day turned into more like 8 seasons in one day!!! In one day we got soaked on the beach 3 times… It rained like it hadn’t rained in 30 years!!! We tried our luck with some Bazarutu island excursions to go snorkeling which turned into 14 people sharing 3 cups of 30$ coffee while crammed under the gazebo of a 800$ per night lodge! That morning we had woken up to a hot sunny day which then turned into cyclone warning rain by the time we arrived with our rubber duck on island nmber one. Eventually by the middle of the day it started clearing up and we all went home as red as Mozambiquen cooked crabs! We had a nice few hours spent on pansy island making Moz a little poorer with these sand dollars after all 14 of us excavated every inch of the 2 football fields sided sand bank where they occur. I say 14 because by now we have made some friends with a couple of pilots and their wives who were currently working in Mozambique and then decided to tag along. Little did they know what they were getting themselves into. You know how the White holidays go down, never a moment without compliant, exaggeration or drama!

With this development of extreme events throughout the holiday we decided to go pub hunting and drown our sorrows. We found a gem of a place which turned out to make and break our holiday, but that’s another story. Boabab backpackers, although 1st skeptical – you will remember our unforgettable experience with Boabab in Zanzibar – turned out to be the place to go, the party and the vibe was completely irresistible!. Some Pretorian guy staying there had a huge funnel and after a few local beers through the monster come rain, sunburn or bad service no one cared anymore and if you did you cant remember. I think we hold the record there for most funneled 2M’s in one night.

To bring my story to a close I would like to leave you with a little bit of valuable advice. Never ever go to Zanzibar twice and then expect to have an enjoyable holiday in Mozambique, I will guarantee your disappointment. After the blue waters, lovely weather and friendly Muslim crime free locals of Zanzibar Mozambique is bound to be a disaster. While it is our neighbor and we knew in some ways what to expect I think we just chose the wrong location and the wrong time to go! I will however consider going back as long as it is to Boabab or somewhere far far away from Vilanculos where the diving isn’t 5 times the price of everywhere else and where the tide isn’t so extreme as to never leave you with soft dry sand to sit on on the beach.

Thank you for an unforgettable experience Mozambique, but the White’s will seriously consider Zanzibar for a 3rd time before you see us again!

We are ready to go…..

Well as ready as the Whites can be without being able to fold up the White house and drag everything along with them…The sissly season is driving me nuts… So much to do, and we off to Moz soon… True mommy style we packing up the entire White house again… Combi, trailer and 4 by 4 off we go… Cant wait…

I just want to give a brief update again about the ongoing disasters this year… Zellie crashed her car – no I am not telling you again it actually happened again… Rykie also had a little mishap where someone reversed into me… Its crazy… I am done with these accidents!!!

Dads bday was a blast!!! We built him a mini White house for a cake.. A big Hansel and Gretel like house cake, complete with the entire fam and a marshmallow Snooky… See photo below….

Other than that we have just been busy organizing everything for Moz and making lists of what to take and what there is and isn’t.. More is’s than is’nts… I see another one of those places coming where we think its beach front sea view and then we stay in a shack… Those places get so terribly hot and we don’t even have aircon..

But oh well, we are all looking forward to the 2 day long road trip and all the story’s to tell when we get back.. Hold thumbs that all goes well and that we come back with a need to return to this new holiday destination…

UpDaTe...

So much as happened in the last few weeks I am sure to forget to mentions something in this post….

Mich said to me the other day “cant we just have one normal week” and with that I can assure you she is not exaggerating… Between Zellie crashing her car, sisters coming to visit, me moving out the house and dads 60th coming up next week there has hardly been time to touch base (let alone blog)…

So Zellie crashed her car, nothing serious just a lack of abs breaks is what I call it, all sorted out and last weeks news, or was it 2 weeks ago?

With dads big day being so close to the end of the year and with everyone entering the silly season we decided to move the celebrations a little earlier as to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules… Muis and Johan flew up from Durban last week Friday (dads bday is only next week Wednesday).. Zellie and I went to go pick them up at the airport. One of their friends happened to fly along and stuck at the airport Keg we get. Needles to say they only woke dad up at midnight with their surprise visit when we eventually got home…

Up at the break of dawn on Saturday morning, I go to my parents place – oh I have moved out the house in the meantime, but just around the block ha ha so be sure to stay updated with the news – anyway – the pipe band arrived at 6am to wake dad up with their melodies… Yes BAND…. Last year we got one guy with his bag pipes to come make a noise below dad’s window this year we needed to top that and do so in a big way as it is the big 6 0…. So with Rykie and hon as the choreographers and the rest of the family inside the house we manage to get dad to the front door without suspicion and dressed in more than his jocks… Down the road our 7 band members start marching, coming to a halt at the front door with happy birthday… Dad was in awe, I think he really loved it… Being Scottish and all…

The rest of the weekend was filled with big cook up breakfasts and late nights out… Cake and the lot…. As always the White house birthday tradition prevails and we still need to sing for him on the big day…

Sneak peek… We are working on a very special gift for dads birthday and I just want to thank everyone for their input and contributions… Zellie has started to think that I am pregnant because of how emotional I get every time we work on the project… All lies…  It is just so beautiful to experience the vast amount of unconditional love in our sometimes dysfunctional family…

MIch to Mom

Mom to Mich

Waar was Phillip die naweek? Wat het met die rotte gebeur? Het hulle Nike's R750 elk gekos???
Ek is so bly julle bederf Aileen so!!

MIch to Mom

luv wendy woo = )

Mom...

More almal,
Ek weet nie hoe hierdie gmail werk nie, so as ek nie antwoord nie is ek sorry, dit voel vir my ek lees net al dieselfde nuus oor en oor!!
Soet wees, love u all.
Lovies julle, drukkie my kleintjies!!!!

Bronwyn...

Ahhh man its sounds sooo cool…. I can just image you lying in the snow screaming with laughter after falling off the sled!!!!

And no, I can’t imagine you all dressed up in jackets and winter accessories – I want to see the photos when you get back!!!!! J

The meeting yesterday was fine – it ended up been a marketing session where everyone through in tons of ideas. I have mailed you on all important issues so you’ll have quite a few emails to go through when you get back to catch up on what’s been going on…. But leave that for now – YOUR ON HOLIDAY!!!!!!

Gosh, perfume is my weakness – but its sooo expensive!!! My favourites are Woman by Hugo Boss or, Flower by Kenzo… but you really don’t need to spend money on us – a small souvenir will suffice – thank you!

Maryke likes Tommy Girl, and Veronica’s favourite is DKNY (the long bottle)… again, these are really expensive gifts – so please don’t break the bank for us – just something small would be hugely appreciated!

Ruargh’s request ZIRH Clean face wash, it’s a bit expensive ($15)… ha ha ha, he makes me laugh…. I think he is going to reply to you himself anyway…

Wow, communication is expensive – so won’t keep you any more!

Oh one more thing – I went Corne’s farewell party which was a James Bond 007 theme and we had to dress up. Maryke (White) borrowed me her Aquamarine colour dress that ties up – the one you had made (that nice one she came to show us here at the office) – I was the only person not in black, but hey I did not mind standing out…. But no-one took a nice full length photo of me…. Partied till 4am. See attached pic…

Love

Veronica...

Hi Elrieta

I just received your mail; Bronwyn forwarded it to us this morning. It is Tuesday morning by us just incase you were wondering!

It sounds like you are having a ball…I am so envious. I am very glad you are enjoying yourself; I really think you needed it! Everything is still hunky Dory over here, we had a spring day competition and our office looks amazing, I will forward a photo quick!

I must say the office is pretty quiet without you and I now understand why you freak out if everything is too ‘relaxed’ it feels like we forgetting something or that we should be panicking about something we forgot! I think the day before you come home, we will be scurrying around, making sure all our tasks have been completed, you know how it goes! Enough about work though!

I hope you will be bringing lots and lots of photos, I am very curious to see the landscape as well as the cultures and the different people. It sounds like there is a lot of history in that part of the world, it all sounds so exciting! I can’t wait to hear all the stories!

You must have a gorgeous day and not think about work or M&T for one second! Send regards to Neville!

Lots of love

Veronica

Mich...

Hi Tannie,

Ek sal vanaand bietjie fotos stuur!

Lovies,

Michelle
